West Japan Railway Company provides railway transport services in Japan. The company operates through Mobility, Retail, Real Estate, Travel and Regional Solutions, and Other segments. The Mobility segment provides passenger transportation, station operation and management, cleaning and maintenance, construction, machinery and equipment installation, and rolling stock services, as well as engages in the railway operations and electrical engineering. The Retail segment engages in the retail/restaurant business, department store business, and goods wholesale business. The Real Estate segment sells and leases real estate properties, as well as operates shopping centers and hotels. The Travel and Regional Solutions segment provides travel agency and regional solutions. The Other segment engages in the advertising and other businesses. The company is also involved in the operation of convenience stores, restaurants, and souvenir shops; and provision of credit cards and electronic money services.  

Anyone living in Japan is probably familiar with the JR train network, although the railway system is divided into different companies depending on the region. JR West covers the western side of Honshu.

For the train discount coupons:

100 shares - 1 coupon

200 shares - 1 coupon, plus an additional coupon per 200 extra shares. So, 1,000 shares is 5 coupons, 2,000 is 10.

2,200 shares - 10 coupons, plus an additional coupon per 400 extra shares.

20,200 shares  - 55 coupons, plus an additional coupon per 600 extra shares.

40,000 shares - 100 coupons.

In addition, if you hold at least 200 shares for 3 years or longer, you will receive 1,000 Wester points, along with the following additional coupons at the following share levels:

600-999 shares - 1 extra coupon

1,000-1,999 - 2 extra coupons

2,000 shares and up - 3 extra coupons

Comment

Getting such a big discount on Shinkansen and other Limited Express trains is not very easy so these coupons can be of great value and probably not too difficult to use, but be aware that a coupon can only be used for a one-way fare and only covers JR West trains so these will be nearly useless unless you live or travel in the area. The coupon book can also be useful if you want to use the services, although some things like the rental car or hotel pricing can be cheaper through other avenues. Discounts for Isetan shopping and the Kyoto Train Museum are certainly a good value.
