Company Information

Corporate Site

SBI Global Asset Management’s objective is to “provide rich and neutral information based on a fair and objective standpoint and helping investors build their assets”. They do so with the core businesses of the Financial Service Business and Asset Management Business.

Originally known as Morningstar Japan, this is one of of many companies under the SBI brand. The stock is known for having dividend increases every year since inception. This is something they emphasize on their IR site, so it's probably reasonable to assume that the increase will continue into the future.

Details

Membership to the "kabushiki shinbun" premium financial website. It includes a variety of general market news, company-specific information, articles by journalists, and other things you would expect from such a site. You can also look up any stock and see if their algorithm considers the stock overpriced, fair, or underpriced. Since this seems to be based on historical stock price performance, I'm not quite sure how useful this feature is, but it's still an extra data point you can use.

You also get some Ripple, a cryptocurrency. In order to redeem it, you have to open an account at SBI VC Trade. I was able to open an account without much issue, but I do have permanent residency. In the signup page, foreigners are only asked if they have permanent residency or not, so I'm not sure having a different kind of visa would make it harder to open an account. The amount of Ripple you get is based on the price in late March.

Requirements

100 shares gets you a 6 month login to the financial news website, clamed to be a 26,400yen value. You also get 2,500yen worth of Ripple.

If you have 500 shares, you get a 1 year login, claimed to be worth 52,800. You also get 10,000yen worth of Ripple. If you hold the stock for a year or more, then you will get 12,000 yen worth of Ripple.

Comment

If you're like me and enjoy following financial news, the website subscription is definitely something you can get value out of. Obviously it's in Japanese but you can browser translate it, there's also a smartphone app which is more or less just a direct link to the website. I read it on a daily basis and it can give some insight into why the market is swinging in the daily direction, but don't expect to find any real hot stock tips or insight that you couldn't find yourself with your own research. The information here also pairs well with the Japan Investment Adviser perk.

The Ripple is a nice bonus and supplements the dividend well, it takes a few months for it to show up in your account once you redeem it, but you could just sell it right away once it deposits or HODL and hope to make more profits. If you're not invested in cryptocurrency, this is a relatively low-risk way to try it out.
