Company Information

Corporate Site

Sanyo Shokai engages in the manufacture and sale of clothing apparel and textiles.  The sales network is mainly in department stores, and in addition to its own brands, it also sells under licensing agreements with various overseas brands.

Sanyo has the license to several overseas brands, including Paul Stuart and Mackintosh. They also had the license for Burberry but lost it when Burberry decided to directly enter the Japanese market. Since they created clothing exclusive to the Japanese market, in Burberry's case they just kept the manufacturing and rebranded it as Crestbridge. So, Japanese Burberry Blue Label/Black Label is now Crestbridge Blue Label/Black Label. If you're interested in learning more, this article gives a good overview.

Comment

I usually take half a day off and go to the venue on the Friday afternoon and it's not very crowded and plenty of selection.  Reading other people's experiences who go on the weekend gives me the impression that the place can get very crowded and things sell out, so I'd recommend going on Friday if at all possible. I have to assume that they restock some products throughout the sale although have no evidence of it.

As for the kind of discounts, I only buy the company's products during the sale so I can't say how it compares with buying elsewhere, but from what I can see even the newest products are available at a discount, and the prior season products are at a very substantial discount. You can probably do pretty well if you just purchase the prior season clothes with the intention to wear them in the future. For an example of pricing, I bought a Crestbridge Black Label overcoat at a recent spring sale which was listed at 88,000 yen and discounted to 19,800 yen.

For some other examples, this blog also has some price comparisons. It's focused on the Crestbridge brand, but I think the pricing is comparable to the other brands from what I could see. It seems like he bought the same overcoat that I did, although his is brown and mine is black.

Chart

I'm not sure what happened in the mid 2000s to cause that crash, but the 2015 fall was when they lost the Burberry license, and COVID certainly did them no favors in 2020. It seems like the company is starting to find its footing again and has an optimistic outlook as people are returning to shopping in the department stores.
